The Master Bedroom has walls and color!

The Master

The master was gutted due to old crumbly plaster. We replaced the electrical, put up drywall and painted. Carpet was installed today and windows go in next week!

Family Room - Color!

The family room was in desperate need of paint! An all white room with an all white fireplace is not our idea of home!

So we added some paint, and changed out the sconces.

What an improvement!!

The Bird

Last Saturday morning, I got a call from our contractor. Max said, "You won't believe what happened this morning!" He then explained that he had gone to the house to work on the master bedroom with a couple of his guys. All of a sudden, he heard a loud crash and shattering glass. He assumed his guys had broken something - they assumed Max had broken something. What they found was a a broken window in Trooper's new room (the blue room), glass all over the floor and a bird laying on the floor! Max then says, "I left it there for you to see." Thanks, Max. I made my way over to the house to see for myself. Yikes! That bird was moving fast!

The Master Bedroom Saga

The master bedroom - a project in itself!

The biggest problem with the bedroom (s0 we thought), was the crumbling plaster. The worst room by far, we decided it would be more cost effective to gut the room and replace the plaster with drywall. The windows will be replaced with double pane energy efficient windows (thank you tax credit!)
Something cool we discovered at Home Depot is the color sample. But with hundreds of colors to choose from, the $2.94 color sample really adds up. Which color? We are still undecided! We are leaning toward a neutral like tan or brown so we can change up our linens throughout the years and not have to repaint.

The room gutted!

What we found under the plaster: old knob and tube wiring, cut and exposed wires, and old plumbing. Rather than drywall over bad wiring, we decided to do it right and rewire the room. Rewiring will be done today - tomorrow? That door behind Trooper will be pulled out and replaced with drywall and drywall goes up!

Cut and exposed wire is above - old knob-and-tube wiring - what a fire hazard!

Playroom Stage 3

Playroom Renovation Continues

The playroom was a disaster - at some point this room was added to the house. They built it directly on top of the concrete patio and layed cork on top, so when the concrete cracked, the whole floor cracked with it. They used ceiling tiles and glued them to the underlay of the roof (no insulation in this room). A roof leak, since resolved, caused staining of the ceiling tiles.

On the low slope of the room, tiles were tacked on this grid to make room for wiring. We had the tiles pulled off and replaced them with drywall.

We removed the window to make way for a slider.

The new subfloor will eliminate potential cracking in our new flooring and allows a smooth transition from the living space into the playroom.

With the subfloor complete, the slider goes in!

The ceiling tiles are down and the drywall is installed. Four canned lights were installed in the low part of the ceiling. The small door to the backyard was removed and closed in making the slider the only exit to the backyard. One scary thing we discovered yesterday was that the room was wired incorrectly and almost caused a fire. The metal around the light bulb stem was burned and some melted! When the workers pulled it down, the lightbulb shattered!

All that remains are minor details! With a trip to IKEA under our belts, we have kid friendly rugs and furniture ready to go. We'll paint and install Pergo next!
